From Austria to Central Otago: A Little Inspiration from an Analog Camera

After a beautiful break in Austria with my two daughters, I’m back home in Central Otago feeling refreshed, inspired and very happy to be behind the camera again.

There is something special about going home. The time with family, the familiar places, long lunches, old stories and, of course, catching up with old friends. Every time I return to Austria, I also make time to meet friends from the photography world. They have always been a huge source of inspiration for me, whether through their work, their ideas or the advice they have generously shared over the years.

This trip, one of those friends introduced me to something completely new.

My first roll of film

He gave me an analog camera and a roll of film and patiently showed me how to use it.

No checking the back of the camera.

No changing settings every few seconds.

No taking 50 versions of the same photo.

Just look, slow down, compose and press the shutter.

And then wait.

I absolutely loved it.

There is something incredibly special about film photography. It feels slower, more intentional and a little bit unpredictable. You don't immediately know what you have captured, which makes getting the film back even more exciting.

So, I took my camera with me and started experimenting.

Have a look at some of the photographs below.

They are not perfect, and that is exactly what I love about them. They feel honest, nostalgic and full of atmosphere.

Bringing analog photography to weddings

This little experiment has definitely got me thinking.

I am considering bringing analog film photography into my wedding photography packages here in Central Otago, Queenstown and Wanaka.

Imagine your wedding day captured digitally, alongside a small collection of beautifully imperfect film photographs. The quiet moments, the grain, the movement, the little details and those photographs that feel like they could have been taken decades ago.

It could be a beautiful addition to a wedding gallery and a lovely way to create something truly timeless.

For now, I’m going to keep experimenting, learning and shooting film.

Because one of the things I love most about photography is that there is always something new to discover.

From Austria to New Zealand, from digital to analog, I’m excited to see where this little adventure takes me.
