Why I Never Get Tired of Photographing Weddings in Central Otago
People often ask me if I ever get bored photographing weddings in the same area.
The answer is no. Never.
I have lived in Central Otago for many years now, and I still find myself stopping the car to look at the mountains, the changing colours in the vineyards, or the light on the lake. It is one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand and I feel lucky that I get to call it home.
As a wedding photographer, it means I get to share these places with couples from all over New Zealand and around the world.
Every wedding is different. Every couple is different. Even if I photograph at the same venue many times, the weather, the light and the people always make it unique.
Cromwell and Clyde Weddings
Cromwell and Clyde are some of my favourite places to photograph weddings.
I love the mix of vineyards, old stone buildings, mountains and open landscapes. There is so much variety without having to drive very far.
Many couples choose Central Otago because they want a relaxed wedding. They want to spend time with their family and friends, enjoy good food and wine, and celebrate in a beautiful place. I think that is one of the reasons weddings here feel so special.
There is no need to rush. Everything feels a little more relaxed.
Wanaka and Queenstown Weddingphotography
Wanaka and Queenstown are famous for a reason.
The scenery is incredible, but what I love most is that there are so many ways to get married here. Some couples plan a big celebration with lots of guests. Others decide on a small ceremony with only their closest family. Some choose to elope and make the day completely about the two of them.
I photograph quite a few elopements and I really enjoy them.
There is something very honest about an elopement. No pressure, no big timeline, just two people making promises to each other in a beautiful place.
The Spray Photos
And then there are the spray photos.
If you know my work, you probably know the photos I mean.
People often think I spend hours planning them, but usually it is much simpler than that. We find the right location, the right light and then we have a bit of fun.
Sometimes it works perfectly on the first try. Sometimes everyone gets a little wet. Sometimes we laugh so much that we have to start again.
That is actually why I like these photos so much. They are not really about the spray. They are about creating a moment together and getting a photo that feels natural and full of life.
Why Photography Matters
When the wedding day is over, the flowers are gone, the cake has been eaten and the dress is hanging back in the wardrobe.
The photographs are what remain.
For me, wedding photography is not about creating perfect people in perfect places. It is about capturing real moments. The happy tears. The hugs. The laughter. The little moments that couples sometimes do not even realise are happening.
Years later, those are often the photographs that mean the most.
If you are planning a wedding in Cromwell, Clyde, Wanaka or Queenstown, I would love to hear your plans. Whether you are organising a large wedding, a small celebration or an adventurous elopement, I would be honoured to tell your story.
